    For decades I have used a handy, instant, natural solution that mimics this device. I simply pick a stiff weed stem or thin tree or shrub branch and strip all the leaves except at the tip. I whip it around my head a few times and the leaves create a buzzing sound similar to that of a dragonfly's wings. The deer/horse flies leave and often don't come back.

    I wish they made these and copy-cat one a bit better quality. I have been looking at these (since I saw you video Mark) and the complaints are that they are cheap and fall apart. Maybe some will create a better mousetrap - or in this case, a better fake dragonfly. ;)

    Not the point of the obvious, but if you are buying wood from the kiosk, they got that wood from somewhere off the ground or cut it off of a tree. It didn't just appear. So somewhere the forest is being robbed of its resources. But they just won't let you do it.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft

      I would think freeze dried meet would work well. You could try the half-salt (sodium-potassium) products or leave it out all together. Thanks for commenting

    I had to go back and watch your first review of this knife to see what the sheath was like. Nice. The Magnacut is definitely a great steel but I still like the overall profile and belly on the other steel. That Tanto style in the other video was interesting and seemed to be more capable as a bushcrafting knife than I expected. Switching topics Mark, I wanted to catch you up on my experiments with soaking charcoal pellets in alcohol and lighter fluid. After soaking them in separate containers for a week, the results with alcohol was completely unacceptable. Surprisingly, so was the pellets soaked in lighter fluid. The lighter fluid soaked ones might be worth while if added to a base of already burned wood coals. I haven’t tried that yet. I can take a single regular wood pellet that has been soaked in alcohol for a week, stand it on its end and it will burn for a LONG time, like a candle. I’ve yet to actually try to burn the charcoal pellets in a pocket stove yet but I’m doubtful they’ll be easy to light or stay lit. Any experience from your viewers is sure welcome. I’m expecting that getting a good bed of regular pellet coals first and then adding the charcoal pellets will work but so far, it seems that sticking to regular wood pellets is much easier. Both your videos on this company’s knives were well done and fairly assessed. Thanks.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft 20 часов назад

      I have not done much experimenting with alcohol and pellets yet as we are under a fire ban most days I go to the woods. It is interesting so I may pursue it at a later time. Thanks for commenting

    I've got a couple stainless steel heat diffusers (designed for induction stoves). One that is really thin and lightweight and the other is 3x the weight. The thin one works OK and warps but doesn't as work as well as the HD one. Both lighter than you cast iron one. Fine for car camping. Considering that you have to use a lot more fuel for this soup vs. a boiling water for a packaged dehydrated meal, it adds to the overall weight requirements for backpacking. Soup definitely looks good!

    G'day Mark, what a ripper vid !!!!! keto focused or not, that dish right up my alley, + some interesting kit to go along with it. I do know I like black bean, ah la Chinese restaurant sauce, though I always keep red kidney and cannelloni beans for chilli con carne and minestrone respectively; reckon I'll give those a try to start with, since I have 'em anyway. And ..... why not a mix, ..... perhaps all 3 ; ) If you're gonna whack in ham, or yes better again, bacon, I'd leave out the extra salt, but hey each to their own. Love the part mash to thicken it up, ..... especially with the bushcrafted masher, and I reckon the avo would help as well. Gotta say; I'm a huge fan of herbs and spices. Apart from the awesome flavors, I'm convinced of their nutritional/medicinal value, yes there is some research, (some more than others), but man why not more and let the pharmo companies concentrate on those you cant grow in the backyard, find readily in nature, or get at a supermarket or green grocer ; ) Nice compact, utensil roll, ..... all those I've come across are too cumbersome to throw in a pack. Like the look of that stove, didnt have any trouble getting right through the whole process. I'd be interested to know, at least roughly, how much gas was used/left for the canister size ? I've probably missed a coupla things, ..... doesn't matter, ...... great stuff mate !!!!!! Cheers Duke.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft 20 часов назад

      Hi Duke, for me on a keto diet too much salt is not an issue, other than the flavour. I agree, Rob's utensil role is just the right size. I did not think to measure how much gas I used but I am doing another meal shortly and I will weigh before and after. Of course, this would include water for coffee and maybe cleanup. My father was bitten without knowing and after experiencing several symptoms was not diagnosed correctly for months and as you said the treatment by then is not effective, so he accepts certain things will never be resolved. Guess having lived in South Texas near Mexico for nearly 78 years and eating TexMex foods all that time, well, pintos are used primarily in cooking, not black beans. I think as others that said your comparing apples to oranges. All the 511s I’ve seen are carbon steel. Which is fine. I have the Bushcraft Black (C). The Eldris has 12C27 stainless. Admittedly an old stainless steel but still has nice qualities as far as rust resistance. As much as I like my Bushcraft it’s not something I would leave for months on end without examining it for rust. You can do that with an eldris. I personally was looking into the knife to put in a fire kit as a backup striker, and perhaps to make feather sticks. IMO they are two knives made for two entirely different purposes.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft 3 дня назад

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft Not that I doubt you but I’m curious where you got a stainless 511. Everything I have read, even from Mora’s own website states that the 511 is carbon, even the limited editions. As far as there are better neck knives in stainless at Mora’s price point I for one would like to know as I haven’t been able to find one. I have an ESEE izula, but again that is carbon and $60.

    Regarding corrosion, I'd treat it like all my finish carbon steel, stick tang knives. I'd put some oil right where the handle ends and let capillary action work oil into the handle. It has worked well for me for many years.

    G'day Mark, I'm quite enamored with this design. Mr. Demko is very very good at it IMO !!!! I'd be stoked with the AUS10A version, but hey great to hear the Magnacut aint 2 or 3 X the price. I reckon it would be a good one to have a first crack with it. Free Reign is a good name for an all rounder, perhaps the king of such, though as a stainless lover ........ "free rain", tickles my fancy ; ) Anyway, as far as testing, no criticisms here, that's pretty much what I do, together with some splitting, i.e with and across the grain, in the backyard or car camping before taking 'em out on the trail, numbers are all very well, but....... realistically/ultimately, .... if it can't deal "well" with Aussie hardwoods, (in my case), ...... it's not coming out in an "unsupported" scenario ; ) Cheers Duke.

      Hey Duke. You have some hard wood I would not want to try and process with any tool. Thanks for commenting

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft Ha ha, yep, there's some tough ones alright, (some rippers for carving too). If I remember rightly a coupla African species are at the top of the tree ; ) In fairness, you get used to it and of course the smaller the piece, ..... the smaller the problem. I've never broken a blade yet, had a few bend very significantly, (splitting), though "lucky" they sprung back perfectly to fight another day ...... car camping ; )

    I made the same experience with AUS 10A. I've heard allot that its not such a great steel but i was positively surprised by it. But then, I still consider 14C28N the best steel for the money spend, any day.

    I was a Victorinox fanboy for decades. But theor pricing on this knife and their reiteration of the original SAK has changed my mind. Also did I get a second Alox Electrician a while ago with an unevenly ground edge + (light)burrs and a bad finish on the scale edges. All this and still no upgrade on blade steel (except for this 1(!) model). Especially regading fixed blade knives, there are so many better european made choices.

    Hi Mark 👋 I'm No Steel Expert As Your Aware But AUS 10 Steel (I Think) Is A Pretty Good Quality Steel Ain't It ?? I Know It's No 3V Or 1095 But Then Again,,,,,,It's Not Cheap Chinese Steel Either !!

    I am not a fan of battening with a knife, I occasionally do it with a manchette (a proper thick one not one of the stamped ones), but I am impressed by the performance of both those knives. Have you ever used a maul or splitting wedges for processing wood?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft 3 дня назад

      Wedges yes but a maul only at home, not hiking. Thanks for commenting

    Both knives are cool. It looked to me that the Magnacut wet through the wood a little easier. We need to see more things made in North America. ✌️🇺🇸🇨🇦✌️

    I know you keep your knives sharp, but you do think it would take any special effort to sharpen it after a week out on a trip?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft 3 дня назад

      Magnacut is supposed to be easier to sharpen than many super steels ( I don't know as I have not truly dulled it yet). I carry a DC4 stone and small stop so I would hope I could do it with that. Thanks for commenting Jim
